Background of the Study:
Borno State, particularly its capital Maiduguri, has been severely affected by the Boko Haram insurgency, which began in 2009. The ongoing violence, displacement, and insecurity have had profound consequences on the human rights of the state's citizens, particularly women. Women in Maiduguri have experienced heightened vulnerability due to the insurgency, facing direct violence, displacement, and a lack of access to basic human rights such as healthcare, education, and freedom of movement.

The insurgency has exacerbated gender-based violence, including abductions, sexual violence, and forced marriages. Additionally, women’s economic and social rights have been severely impacted, with many losing their livelihoods and access to resources. This study aims to assess the extent to which the insurgency has impacted women's rights in Maiduguri, focusing on the physical, psychological, and social consequences of the conflict on women’s well-being and human rights.

Statement of the Problem:
The insurgency in Borno State has led to the mass displacement of women, resulting in the erosion of their fundamental rights, including their right to security, access to education, and the ability to participate in economic activities. In Maiduguri, women have been particularly affected by the insurgency due to their roles within the family and society. This study seeks to assess the impact of the insurgency on women's rights and explore how these violations can be mitigated.

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess the impact of the Boko Haram insurgency on women's rights in Maiduguri, Borno State.

  2. To evaluate the extent of gender-based violence faced by women as a result of the insurgency.

  3. To recommend strategies for improving the protection of women’s rights in Maiduguri during and after the insurgency.

Research Questions:

  1. How has the Boko Haram insurgency affected women's access to basic human rights in Maiduguri?

  2. What forms of gender-based violence have women faced as a result of the insurgency in Maiduguri?

  3. What measures can be implemented to protect and promote the rights of women in Maiduguri amidst the insurgency?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. The Boko Haram insurgency has significantly undermined women's rights in Maiduguri, particularly regarding access to security and economic resources.

  2. Women in Maiduguri have been disproportionately affected by gender-based violence due to the insurgency.

  3. Interventions focusing on women’s protection and rehabilitation can reduce the adverse impacts of the insurgency on women’s rights in Maiduguri.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study will focus on the impact of the insurgency on women’s rights in Maiduguri, Borno State. Limitations include potential challenges in accessing data from affected communities, difficulties in gathering information from displaced persons, and the sensitive nature of the subject matter, which may limit the willingness of participants to share their experiences.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Insurgency: An armed rebellion or uprising, typically aimed at overthrowing a government or occupying power.

  • Women’s Rights: The legal and moral entitlements of women to enjoy equality, security, education, and participation in societal activities.

  • Gender-Based Violence: Violence directed at an individual based on their gender, including sexual violence, forced marriage, and human trafficking.
